BOOK REVIEW: VAIN (The Seven Deadly #1) by Fisher Amelie

Title: VAIN (The Seven Deadly #1)
Author: Fisher Amelie

SYNOPSIS

If you’re looking for a story about a good, humble girl, who’s been hurt by someone she thought she could trust, only to find out she’s not as vulnerable as she thought she was and discovers an empowering side of herself that falls in love with the guy who helps her find that self, blah, blah, blah...then you’re gonna’ hate my story.

Because mine is not the story you read every time you bend back the cover of the latest trend novel. It’s not the “I can do anything, now that I’ve found you/I’m misunderstood but one day you’ll find me irresistible because of it” tale. Why? Because, if I was being honest with you, I’m a complete witch. There’s nothing redeeming about me. I’m a friend using, drug abusing, sex addict from Los Angeles. I’m every girlfriend’s worst nightmare and every boy’s fantasy.

I’m Sophie Price...And this is the story about how I went from the world’s most envied girl to the girl no one wanted around and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

I finished reading Vain in the wee hours of the morning and ended up having puffy eyes. This book made me weep and broke my heart. It broke my heart into tiny fragments but at the end of the journey of these characters, the story managed to put it back up. Vain is one of those stories that I can say that it truly touched my heart.

The story starts off with Sophie Price, our main character who feels like every single person on Earth should bow down with just the sight of her, was caught in a party with/doing Coke. Unluckily, it's her second offense and that ensued the possibility for a graver sentence. But she never would've thought that it'll be a service of six months in a certain orphanage in Uganda! What?! Sophie Price?! The top of the richie rich kids ladder banished to Uganda? Well, Sophie didn't a have choice but to suck it up and face whatever challenge is going be thrown in her way...

Travel. Uganda. Orphans. Staff. Ian. But then what seems to be the craziest sentence she first thought then vanished. It was replaced with comfort and happiness. Go figure.

Good morning my dear, naive friend,
I hope you’re enjoying a breakfast of regret and sorrow.
Why?
Because you sent me to work for Dean Harper, aka a control freak in a tailor-made suit. Sure he owns the trendiest restaurants in NYC, but c'mon Jo, his ego makes Kanye West look like the Dalai Lama.
He's the type of guy that only hears the word “no” when it's followed by “don’t stop.”

MINI BOOK REVIEWS | SWEET ADDICTION by J. Daniels and A MILLION MILES AWAY by Lara Avery

Title: SWEET ADDICTION
Author: J. Daniels

SYNPOSIS

Wedding hookups never amount to anything.

Those who partake in this wicked little activity know the rules. Get in. Get laid. Get out. There's no expectation of a relationship. It is what it is.

Dylan Sparks knows the rules. She’s familiar with the protocol. And she engages in the best sex of her life with a complete stranger at her ex-boyfriend’s wedding.

Reese Carroll doesn’t care about the rules. He wants more than just one night with Dylan.

And Dylan finds him too addicting to pass up.

Sweet Addiction is the story of one woman’s struggle to keep things casual, and one man’s desire to never let her go.

I do not recommend for you to read this book in a public place. You definitely do not want to embarass yourself, right? I tried it. I opened my Kindle app, read where I left off and laughed because of certain OMG scene and yep, you don't want to know what happened next.

Oh boy, I finished SWEET ADDICTION by J. Daniels a few days ago and wow, it was totally a "fans-myself-oh-so-hot" read with a sprinkle of laugh out loud and squeal-worthy scenes here and there. Looking back to the books that I've recently read, it had actually been a long time since I've read something hilarious and uber sexy at the same time. So it's really a good thing that I came across this book, purchased it off of Kindle and gave this book a try. I had a good time reading it. Damn, where can I find my own Reese Carroll? Dylan's one lucky btch for nabbing him. Aside from Dylan and Reese (who both frustrated me in some parts), another character that stood out for me is Joey! I need a friend in my life who's like Joey. Someone who can make me laugh and who can knock some sense into my head if needed. I swear, Joey's got the best timing and lines in this book!!! I just had a small problem with the drama thrown in it. Most especially towards the end part. I think, I would have liked it more if we could have just avoided the whole "overhearing" fiasco.

I know that there's a sequel to Dylan and Reese's story and I'm planning to read it after I finished the ARC of Bounce by Noelle August. To those who have read the sequel, what can you say about it? How's the drama going on in there? Please share your thoughts. Thank you. :)

BOOK REVIEW | WHEN I'M GONE by Abbi Glines

Title: WHEN I'M GONE
Author: Abbi Glines (Website | Twitter)
Publication Date: April 7, 2015
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

SYNOPSIS

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next new adult novel in the Rosemary Beach series, in which we meet Mase, a Texas heartthrob first introduced in Take a Chance who comes to Rosemary Beach to stir things up.

I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…

Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…

Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Will Mase be any different?

I don't care if there were parts in When I'm Gone that were predictable because I just love (love, love, love) Reese and Mase together, the Rosemary Beach series and the other characters in it. It is nice to go back from time to time to a setting/world that I love, seeing the other characters from the previous books interacting and knowing what there life is now after their particular books have ended. If I have to compare it to the Sea Breeze series, I have to say that the story lines and characters in RB series are more complicated and has more depth than SB. I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy my time reading books from SB series and that I don't care about the characters because I genuinely did have fun and I do care about them. It's just that for me, RB series digs deeper into the characters and character-related conflicts than SB.

Here in When I'm Gone, we are introduced to Reese Ellis who has a whole lot of complications happening with her character. She has a case of untreated dyslexia and a dark past which involves her family. Her problem isn't fully resolved here but we see her dealing with it and witness her easing herself away from the cloud of darkness that seems to always come along with her. Knowing about her situation, it is always a joy to see her happy and being excited about the things (even the small ones) that are happening to her. She really deserves happiness in her life. But then, Glines managed to throw in another curve ball. Oh god, the sequel will surely be a roller coaster ride for her character. It feels like she'll be completely thrown off with this very huge development in her life and I don't know how she'll react on this. It could go two ways. I don't know. I guess, I have to read the next book to find out.

WAITING ON WEDNESDAY | UNTIL FRIDAY NIGHT (The Field Party #1) by Abbi Glines

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that I or us, readers are eagerly anticipating. Here's my pick this week ...

Title: UNTIL FRIDAY NIGHT (The Field Party #1)
Author: Abbi Glines (Website | Twitter)
Publication Date: August 25, 2015
Publisher: Simon Pulse

SYNOPSIS

To everyone who knows him, West Ashby has always been that guy: the cocky, popular, way-too-handsome-for-his-own-good football god who led Lawton High to the state championships. But while West may be Big Man on Campus on the outside, on the inside he’s battling the grief that comes with watching his father slowly die of cancer.

Two years ago, Maggie Carleton’s life fell apart when her father murdered her mother. And after she told the police what happened, she stopped speaking and hasn’t spoken since. Even the move to Lawton, Alabama, couldn’t draw Maggie back out. So she stayed quiet, keeping her sorrow and her fractured heart hidden away.

As West’s pain becomes too much to handle, he knows he needs to talk to someone about his father—so in the dark shadows of a post-game party, he opens up to the one girl who he knows won’t tell anyone else.

West expected that talking about his dad would bring some relief, or at least a flood of emotions he couldn’t control. But he never expected the quiet new girl to reply, to reveal a pain even deeper than his own—or for them to form a connection so strong that he couldn’t ever let her go…

I’m in a serious blogging funk. I’m sure you’ve noticed it already that I keep on bouncing back and forth from posting stuff to being MIA. I’m reading books every now and then but I end up not being able to finish writing my book reviews for it. I also have several unfinished ramblings just saved up on my laptop. I don’t know what’s happening to me. Though, maybe it has to do with me being overtly active on Facebook and in updating The Mortal Instruments Philippines. But whatever this is, I need to shake it off and find my spark again towards blogging. Don’t think for a second that I’ve lost my enthusiasm over books because it’s still here with me. I still get excited over upcoming releases and I still enjoy promoting books. Whenever I read something great, I duly promote it over my social media accounts and bring it to other readers’ attention.

Nevertheless, I’m here now and trying to get past through this blogging block that I have. And what a way to celebrate me being back on the scene other than reviewing an ARC! I finished reading an ARC of The Allure of Julian Lefray by R.S. Grey yesterday and I absolutely loved it! This is one of those books that I’ve been anticipating to be released this June and I’m so blessed to be able to read and review it a week before its publication date.

One of the things that I love the most about R.S. Grey is that the synopsis of her books doesn’t give away too much of the story. You think you know what you’ll be dealing with while reading the book nuh-uh, think again. Or should I say, carry along with your reading and let the story and characters surprise you.

The Allure of Julian Lefray follows the character of Josephine Keller, a small-town fashion blogger who knows what she wants in life and is set in stone to follow her dreams and aspirations. What’s the best place in the world to fulfill that and live the dream? Duh. NEW YORK, it’s basically the city where dreams are made of and a buzzing place for fashion events that would totally feed Josephine’s hunger and passion for fashion. But soon she would learn that nabbing a job in a very competitive and fast-paced city isn’t easy. She ended up applying for the position of executive assistant to Lorena Lefray at Lorena Lefray Designs. Well, that seems to be an okay job if she gets hired, right? At this point, anything will do as long as it will help her get her head above the water and it’s heading towards her inclination – which is fashion.

When a new hit takes him back to his hometown, he looks forward to spending time somewhere familiar. He reached over and unbuckled the seat belt I hadn’t realized I had put on. Sliding his arm behind my back, he shifted over the center console and moved closer to me. Carefully I used my feet to push up so he could slide underneath me. His body pushed against mine and I could feel every manly inch of him pressed behind me, down to the muscles his button up shirt concealed. As his hands slid around my waist to help steady me, his thumbs pressed against my back and rubbed soft circles, as if he was trying to comfort me—but instead it was accomplishing the exact opposite. I let the weight off of my feet, easing down on to his lap so I could move to the other seat.

“I’m ready.” His voice was husky in my ear and for a second I thought about telling him I was more than ready myself. Thankfully I was able to keep my senses and remember that there was someone intent on killing me in a car not far behind us.

BLOG TOUR | FLUKES by Nichole Chase

About FLUKES:

Meena has a secret guarded closely by her family—a secret as dangerous as the sea and buried just as deep. When court-appointed community-service workers are assigned to Flukes, the family-owned animal sanctuary, everyone is on high alert. It doesn’t help that Meena finds herself attracted to sexy-as-sin Blake Weathering, one of the new workers. If he wasn’t so distracting, she might be able to land Flukes a much-needed cruise-line contract.

Blake Weathering, the first in his family to attend public school, has developed a tough image. Unfortunately, it lands him in trouble. Now banned from his high school graduation ceremony, getting his diploma is dependent upon a community-service gig cleaning up fish crap. No diploma, no trust fund fortune—and no way to escape his overbearing father. The last thing he needs is the distraction of a mysterious girl with teal eyes who pulls at his heartstrings.

When Blake discovers Meena’s secret, they are both thrown into a desperate search for information about her past. Two worlds pull them in opposite directions, and they will have to fight to hold on to all that really matters.

“He’s friendly.” Blake’s voice was amused and he automatically scratched under Mitch’s chin. She squee’d loudly and spit water at his face.

“Mitch is a girl.” He held his hands up to ward off her wet assault and I couldn’t help but laugh. He didn’t seem irritated by Mitch’s antics, just amused and wet.

“My apologies, Mitch. I did think it was weird that you were so pretty if you were a boy.” Blake reached out a hand and scratched her chin again. He looked at me from the corner of his eyes. “Did you tell her to do that?”

“What? Oh, the splashing? No. She’s just sensitive.” Jallia came over and rolled onto her side. I traced my hands over her belly and cooed under my breath. The baby was healthy and happy. He was going to be a big boy. “Not long now, Jallia. You’re going to have your son out and playing in no time.”

Mitch nosed her mother for a minute, checking the baby as well. After a minute, Stormy started making noises about being hungry and I laughed. I set the fish bucket between Blake and Ime. “Here, feed them, but don’t let them knock the bucket over.” Mitch rose out of the water and flopped onto the decking between us. “Mitch! You got my clothes wet!” I yanked the bucket out of the way and pushed Mitch back into the water.

Stormy darted through the water and opened his mouth for Blake to deposit some fish. It didn’t take us long to empty the bucket and I enjoyed answering Blake’s questions. He was smarter than I had given him credit for.

“Are these markings from the other dolphins? They look like teeth scrapes.” Blake leaned close to Stormy and peered at the teeth rakings on his melon.

“Yeah. Some of them are from playing, roughhousing. Some of them are from being irritating. He is a nosy guy.” I ran my hand over Stormy’s head. “Most of them fade pretty quickly. They shed their skin every two hours.”
